Considering Going Solar? Here are some tips from Steve Rick, principal of Street Dixon Rick Architecture:
Research startup funding. Grants may be available from the federal and state government to assist with purchasing panels and installation. Commercial customers should get in touch with the Tennessee Clean Energy Grant Program, which provides low- or no-interest loans for solar installation.
Investigate federal tax breaks, available for both homeowners and businesses that use alternative energies.
Check with your electricity provider for information on the Generation Partners program, which provides credit for clean energy generated for the Tennessee Valley Authority.
Find a qualified installer who can offer advice throughout the process.
Think long-term. If energy prices remain constant, it will generally take 10-12 years for the solar panels to pay for themselves.
